The Challenge
In today's economy, one can hardly imagine a day without energy. From home appliances and computers to heating systems and the vehicles we use to commute and transport materials and products, we need energy sources to generate power and sustain our lives and economy. Yet traditional sources of power are increasingly vulnerable. America relies chiefly on fossil fuels that are acquired at a rising economic, societal, and public health costs. Our energy supplies are ever more expensive and at risk. And the price we pay enriches foreign powers that do not always share American interests.
Energy is one of the greatest national security challenges facing our country today. But energy is not a problem that can be addressed by the federal government acting alone. State and local governments and their citizens have a unique responsibility to shape their energy policy in a way that will advance national security. States also have an opportunity to pursue alternatives that will strengthen their own economies. Innovation and competitive solutions have the potential to build Midwestern business and create sustainable jobs for generations into the future.
The March 25 Forum on "National Energy Security: Challenges and Opportunities for the Midwest" is an opportunity to engage state leaders, entrepreneurs, and experts in a discussion of the energy security challenge. The forum will begin with a discussion of national energy security issues and a review of how those issues affect Midwestern states. Energy security will be placed in regional context and alternatives for state and local leaders in the Midwest will be highlighted. This initial discussion will be followed by panels on transit and the power grid that will highlight specific opportunities and innovations in these two important energy policy areas.
