Dean's Message
Dear Alumni and Friends:
I hope you will join us for one of the excellent speakers or CLE events we have planned for the remainder of this semester. I would also like to update you on the search for a permanent dean for the law school. The search committee, appointed by IUPUI's Chancellor Charles Bantz in April, is currently in the process of screening applications and will begin their confidential interviews soon. We hope to be able to announce the appointment of a new dean for the law school in early 2007. Read more about the dean's search.
I know we are all looking forward to the law school's next exciting chapter and are eager to find out who will lead us in the future.
Best Regards, Susanah M. Mead Interim Dean, IU School of Law - Indianapolis |

The Pension Protection Act of 2006: A Short Guide to Charitable IRA Rollovers
On August 17, 2006, President Bush signed the Pension Protection Act of 2006, a new law that includes a long-awaited provision that will permit taxpayers to make direct charitable transfers from their Individual Retirement Accounts. This new law may provide a new opportunity for you or your clients to make a gift to the IU School of Law - Indianapolis or other favorite charity with assets held in traditional or Roth IRAs.
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides an exclusion from gross income for otherwise taxable IRA distributions of up to $100,000 per year from traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs for "qualified charitable distributions" made during 2006 and 2007 by plan owners who have attained at least age 70½ on the date of distribution to charity.
Qualified charitable distributions are defined as any distribution from a traditional IRA or Roth IRA which are made directly by the IRA administrator to an organization that has qualified as a charity under the Internal Revenue Code and that would have been taxable if distributed to the plan participant. The definition specifically excludes distributions to donor advised funds or supporting organizations, even if maintained by an otherwise qualified organization.
A qualified charitable distribution made under this Act will satisfy a plan owner's minimum required distribution for the year, up to $100,000. IRA owners are deemed to elect out of income tax withholdings for the amounts distributed to charity. No additional income tax charitable deductions will be allowed.
For further reference, you may refer to the text of the charitable provisions of H.R. 4 at: http://www.pgdc.com/pdf/HR4_Text_Charitable_Provisions.pdf and the Joint Committee on Taxations Explanation at: http://www.pgdc.com/pdf/JCX-38-06.pdf
(both available in PDF format). If you, or a client, are interested in making a gift to IU via IRA Charitable Rollover and would like more information, please contact Estacia Brandenburg, J.D. at the Indiana University Foundation at 317 278-5653 or esmbrand@iupui.edu. |
