Dean's Message

Dear Alumni and Friends:
Spring at the law school means that students and faculty are preparing for final exams and the administration is focused on Commencement, which takes place May 14 at the Indiana Convention Center.  We are very pleased and proud to have Governor Mitch Daniels as our keynote speaker for the event.  I know it will be a day our graduates and their families will remember.  Spring also means that Alumni Weekend (May 19-20) is fast approaching.  This year, like many of you, I will be celebrating the anniversary of my graduation from our law school.  For me, it was 30 years ago that I reached the milestone of passing from student to alumna.  I encourage all of our alumni and friends of the school to join us for this year's celebrations.  We will be honoring Susan Brooks, '85 on Friday, and Hon. Carr L. Darden, '70 on Saturday.  There will be free CLE as well as reunion class events and ample opportunity to connect with old friends.  I look forward to seeing many of you in May.

        Best Regards,

Susanah M. Mead
Interim Dean, IU School of Law - Indianapolis

Classes of 2006.  Governor Daniels attended his first year of law school at IU School of Law - Indianapolis before completing his education at the Georgetown University Law Center.  Some alumni may remember that Daniels gave the commencement address to the Class of 1986 when he was an assistant to President Ronald Reagan, working on political and intergovernmental affairs.  Before being elected Governor in 2004, Daniels worked in the administration of President George W. Bush as Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

IU Law-Indianapolis Student Participates in International Criminal Court Session at the U.N. in New York
After September 11, 2001, Sean Monkhouse (3L) says he felt a ?compelling responsibility to not just sit on my couch and complain about the state of the world, but to get out there and do something about it.? After speaking with Professor George E. Edwards, director of the law school?s Program on International Human Rights Law, the choice of our law school was an easy one for him.  At the end of January, Monkhouse was invited to spend three days as a student delegate at the meetings of the International Criminal Court (ICC), held at the United Nations in New York.  Monkhouse plans to pursue a career in international law and foreign policy development after graduating in May. 2006 Spirit of Philanthropy Honorees are Clara Woodard and the Eli Lilly & Company Foundation
On April 27, IUPUI will honor the 2006 Spirit of Philanthropy Award winners at the Scottish Rite cathedral in downtown Indianapolis. This year the law school is proud to honor Clara M. Woodard for her generous gift to endow a professorship in memory of her late husband, Harold R. Woodard. Woodard was a well known intellectual property attorney and partner at the firm of Woodard Emhardt Moriarty McNett & Henry.  He taught for many years as an adjunct professor at the law school.  Hal Woodard was also the first-ever recipient of the Spirit of Philanthropy award from the law school in 1989.

The law school will also honor Eli Lilly & Company and its Foundation for continued support of law school programs. The Foundation is being recognized for it's leadership gifts to the capital campaign as well as to our new Center for Intellectual Property Law and Innovation. In addition, over the years, Lilly has employed many of our most distinguished graduates and donors, and continues to partner with the law school on innovative CLE programs held at the school each year with proceeds benefiting scholarships for our students.
