Master of Laws (LL.M.) Program
The LL.M. degree awarded by the School of Law is a single degree consisting of four tracks, allowing for curricular concentrations in the areas described. The School of Law does not award multiple LL.M. degrees with designated specialties.
The four tracks offered within the LL.M. degree are:
New Faculty
The law school is pleased to announce that two Justices of the Indiana Supreme Court have agreed to teach in our LL.M. program. Justice Steven David will teach a course in Contracts to LL.M. students, and Justice Robert Rucker will teach a course in Torts. In addition, the Attorney General of the State of Indiana, Greg Zoeller, will be teaching a course in Constitutional Law.
We are honored to include these distinguished state leaders among our teaching faculty.
The Program
- 24-credit Program with a wide range of elective courses (students may choose to take more than 24 credits, at the applicable tuition rate per credit hour, to satisfy bar admission requirements in some states)
- Students have up to three (3) academic years to complete degree requirements and may opt for part-time and evening study schedules
- Per visa regulations, foreign students ordinarily graduate in two semesters
- Research component and Master's thesis worth 2-4 credits required (Optional for the American Law for Foreign Lawyers track)
- Externship and optional practical training (OPT) opportunities
- Advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction if indicated by placement test at no cost
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicants must hold a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school in the U.S., or a first degree in law or comparable from a university outside of the U.S., or must be a foreign applicant licensed to practice outside the U.S.
- All applicants for whom English is a second language must prove English-language proficiency by submitting one of the following:
- A minimum score of 81 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT)
- A minimum composite score of 6.0 on the IELTS
- “First Grade” score on the National Japanese English Proficiency STEP Exam
- Official transcript showing satisfactory completion of Intensive English Master Level 112 at any ELS Language Center
- Official transcript and/or graduation certificate of an earned baccalaureate or graduate degree from a college or university in a primarily or officially English-speaking country
- A successful applicant must demonstrate academic achievement, professional accomplishment and English language competency.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Extensive scholarship assistance is available to students with demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic/professional credentials, however, LL.M. Program does not offer full tuition waivers.
Application Procedure
Applicants interested in applying for the LL.M. Degree should apply and submit application forms with all required, supporting documents to LSAC as directed on the Application page of this website.
Conditional Admission for Non-Native English Speaking Applicants
You may, under certain circumstances, be eligible for a conditional admission to the LL.M. program at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law if you cannot present one of the above as evidence of English proficiency. In order to be considered for conditional admission, you must submit all other required components of the application, and you will be evaluated based on all criteria except English proficiency. You must also provide a supplemental statement at the time of application with an explanation of how and when you plan to satisfy the English proficiency requirement.
