2005 Staff Council Spirit Award Winner Janice Watson!
Janice Watson, Cataloging Assistant in the Ruth Lilly Law Library, has been named a winner of the 2005 IUPUI Gerald L. Bepko Staff Council Spirit Award.
The Spirit Award recognizes employees who through extraordinary service and special (professional, team, or volunteer) contributions exemplify the spirit of IUPUI, strengthening IUPUI by fostering collegiality, cooperation, creativity and innovation toward the end of helping IUPUI become one of the nations' best urban universities for employment and education. The Spirit Award is presented to the staff member or team who most exemplifies the spirit of IUPUI.
Janice’s "theatrical" productions during the Law School's annual Halloween costume contest have become the stuff of legend. She also organizes regular social activities like cookouts to bring the library together for a little fun and fellowship. She is also the driving force behind the Law Library’s contributions to charitable efforts like Backpack Attack and canned food drives.

Librarians’ Article Published on Indiana Courts’ Citation Practices
“Recent Citation Practices of the Indiana Supreme Court and the Indiana Court of Appeals,” co-authored by Head of Reference Dragomir Cosanici and Catalog Librarian Chris Long, appears in the peer-reviewed Legal Reference Services Quarterly, v. 24, issues 1/2, pages 103-119. The date of the paper publication is June 23, 2005. The on-line version is slated for publication in May.
Funded by a grant from two special interest sections of the American Association of Law Libraries, their study provides an empirical, practical measure of the citation practices of the two highest courts in the state of Indiana for the years 1994-2003. It focuses on the types of legal materials most frequently cited as authority, examining the importance of both primary and secondary sources. It also discusses the importance of housing and maintaining appellate briefs from the two highest courts in the state of Indiana. This is the only citation study of this kind encompassing Indiana courts.

Find It on the Web: Free Legal Research on the Internet
A half-day workshop on free electronic legal resources by reference librarians Dragomir Cosanici and Debra Denslaw at the annual Indiana Library Federation conference was well-received. Mainly aimed to assist public librarians, the March 22, 2005 workshop focused on important issues facing those who seek to complete credible, yet free or nearly free, legal research on-line.
First, the participants were instructed on the Indiana statutory provision prohibiting the practice of law by non-attorneys. Lively discussions filled with real life examples highlighted the boundaries of appropriate research help in public libraries. Second, participants learned how to keep a research log, define issues, determine the appropriate jurisdiction, locate primary law, retrieve relevant materials, and update and verify case and statutory law. Security issues such as the privacy of research trails and the importance of deleting cookies and clearing history, all related to on-line searching, were also addressed.
The workshop drew very good reviews and interest from non-attendees. We are still receiving requests for our outline from those who could not attend the conference workshop. To get you started on your research projects, we have highlighted a number of free on-line resources from the program:
