Circulation Policy and Procedures

Very few of the materials in the Ruth Lilly Law Library circulate. Those that do circulate can only be checked out by law faculty, law students, IUPUI graduate students and other libraries. Materials are available to attorneys and the general public for use in the library only.

Nothing circulates from the Law Library except one-volume monographic items (also called "treatises") from the classified collection. Any item which forms part of a multi-volume set, has a pocket part or is looseleaf in nature does not circulate.

  • Monographic items on RESERVE circulate overnight.

  • Monographic items from the general collection circulate for one month, with renewal privileges so long as no one else has requested the item. Materials must be brought to the library for renewal. They cannot be renewed over the phone.

Examples of materials that do NOT circulate are:

  • Bound or unbound journals or law reviews
  • Reporters (official or unofficial)
  • Statutes (state or federal, session laws or codes)
  • Regulations (state or federal)
  • Encyclopedias
  • Digests
  • Anything in LOOSELEAF format
  • A.L.R. series
  • Reference materials
  • Multi-volume texts and treatises

All Faculty Reserve materials have cards and pockets on the inside of the back cover. When checking out an item, simply write the date and your name on the card. The desk attendant will ask you for your student identification card (OneCard) or driver's license which will be retained until the Faculty Reserve material is returned to the Circulation Desk.

One-volume texts and treatises from the general collection (i.e., NON-RESERVE) are circulated on an automated circulation system. One Cards must be presented at the Circulation Desk to check out materials.

Checklisting

Students who have not returned library materials at the end of the semester will be checklisted. Checklisting will hold up all grades, transcripts and diplomas.

Placing a Hold

Library materials that are currently unavailable may be requested by placing a hold on them. Contact a Reference Librarian or a Circulation Supervisor to place a hold. When the material is available the requestor will be notified and the item will be held at the Circulation Desk for three days. After three days it will be returned to the collection.

Reference Policy

Reference assistance is educating the user so that they can locate the proper information and be able to use the materials knowledgeably the next time. Reference is providing users assistance so that they may select and use appropriate legal materials and information. This includes locating information on a topic for research. The reference staff member will be guided by input from the user. At no time is legal advice or legal interpretation given. If legal advice is required, then the user may wish to hire an attorney.

Reference Desk Hours

Reference services are available to all library patrons. We try to provide reference during the hours listed below.

Monday - Thursday  9:00 am to 9:00 pm
Friday  9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Saturday  9:00 am to 5:30 pm
Sunday  12:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Document Delivery

Interlibrary Loans

Through the law library, IU-Indianapolis law students and faculty have access to the resources of other Indiana University libraries and borrowing privileges from libraries across the nation. If the lending library is unable to send us the material in hard copy, we can often obtain a photocopy for your use. If you are an IU-Indianapolis law student or law faculty member and find you need something which is not available here, please ask for assistance in securing an interlibrary loan or a photocopy.

Cataloging, classification, book identification, and interlibrary loans are carried out on the OCLC database. This bibliographic service offers librarians assistance in identifying materials, or in borrowing an item from another library anywhere in the nation.

Place your request with a librarian, or fill out one of the Interlibrary Loan Request Forms at the Circulation Desk. Please fill in all requested information on this form. If vital information is omitted, the library cannot make the Interlibrary Loan request. Lending procedures on interlibrary loans are governed by instructions of the lending library and the ALA Interlibrary Loan Policy, as well as applicable copyright laws.

Notification regarding interlibrary loans, and other pertinent information, will be delivered to individual mail boxes.

The ILL policy concerning borrowing materials is available. For further information contact a librarian.

Photocopy Service

The library provides copies for a fee. Anyone with a specific citation must pre-pay $15.00/citation plus $.25 per page to have a citation mailed. Faxed copies are available for an additional $5.00/citation plus any long distance charges.
