Interlibrary Loan Policy

General borrowing

  1. Patrons

The law library will borrow materials through OCLC ILL for law faculty and students after it has been determined that the resource is not available on-campus or electronically. No borrowing services are provided to other patrons with the following exception: If an IUPUI-affiliated person has come in-person and needs an item missing off our shelves, we will do an OCLC ILL request for that item.

  2. Prerequisites & Limitations

Before instituting any request, it must first be determined that the needed material is not available on-campus or electronically. The borrowing form has a section to indicate compliance with this prerequisite. Students must determine prior to sending the request how much they are willing to pay as all service fees are passed on to them. There is no borrowing for recreational purposes. Only those items directly related to law school institutional, instructional, or research purposes will be borrowed.

Intra-Campus borrowing

  1. Books

The prerequisites and limitations on general borrowing also apply to intra-campus borrowing. All campus libraries will honor OCLC ILL book requests at no charge. Items will be sent by either Wheels or Campus Mail. The borrowing library will conform to the circulation rules of the lending library.

  2. Photocopies

The campus libraries have agreed to migrate to a policy of not doing OCLC ILL photocopy requests. If a patron wants a photocopy from another campus library they will be directed to contact that library either in person or through their copy service available through their web page. Current fees are $5 per citation.

  3. Patrons

Students: All students will be treated equally. No intra-campus borrowing services will be provided for students.

Faculty: The library will use OCLC ILL to borrow books intra-campus for law faculty. For photocopying services, as the faculty is dealing directly with the servicing library, the faculty will bear the cost of the copying. So as to not circumvent campus policy, if faculty request an OCLC ILL copy request in lieu of borrowing from an on-campus library, any fees incurred will be passed on to the faculty member.

Staff: Borrowing is available through the University library.
