Daniel H. Cole is the R. Bruce Townsend Professor of Law at the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis and an Affiliated Faculty Member of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University at Bloomington.

He has been a Visiting Scholar in the Faculty of Law and Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge, where he remains a  Life Member of Clare Hall (College of Advanced Studies); and he has served as the John S. Lehmann Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.

Professor Cole approaches the law as a social science. He teaches and writes mainly about topics at the intersection of the law and economics of property, natural resources, and environmental protection.  His articles appear predominantly in peer review journals, rather than conventional, student-edited law reviews.

Pollution & Property
(Cambridge University Press, 2002)

Chinese translation forthcoming 2010
(Cambridge University Press & Peking University Press)

Advanced Praise:

'... a first-rate analysis of environmental management from the several viewpoints of law, economics, measurement technology, and political will.'  J.H. Dales, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto

'....  At last, in Dan Cole's careful and comprehensive work, an intellectually honest account of the role of property relations in pollution policy. Finally, clear thought stands a plausible chance of trumping ideology masquerading as analysis by lawyers and economists.' Daniel W. Bromley, University of Wisconsin - Madison

(Macmillan and St. Martin's, 1998)

Awarded 1999 AAASS/Orbis Polish Book Prize
"Cole's book is a veritable tour de force.
Carefully researched, thoroughly analyzed,
and very well documented, it is a pioneer study
of a critical issue area which hitherto has been
neglected not only in the East but also in the West.
As such, it should be obligatory reading for all
students of environmental politics and economics
on both sides of the old "iron curtain."  The
publisher, St. Martin's Press, ought to be
applauded for publishing this very important
and timely study." (From the award citation.)
