IU Law - Indianapolis

Summer Internship Program

Since 1997, the Program in International Human Rights Law (PIHRL) has facilitated over one hundred sixty eight (168) internship placements.  The interns provided pro bono services in over fifty seven (57) countries around the world. From the “untouchable castes” in Nepal to the displaced Roma of Europe; from refugee camps in the Czech Republic to the streets of orphan children in Costa Rica; from the Office of the Attorney General of Rwanda to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations in Geneva and offices at the United Nations World Headquarters in New York, our students have made, and continue to make, valuable contributions to their host communities around the globe.

Eligibility

J.D. students have been eligible for internships since Professor George Edwards founded the PIHRL in 1997. LL.M. students were eligible for internships when Professor Edwards was Faculty Director of the LL.M. Track in International Human Rights Law. Currently, J.D. students are eligible for internships, as J.D. students have been eligible since 1997.

PIHRL internships provide students with invaluable opportunities to learn about International Human Rights Law, International Criminal Law, and International Humanitarian Law. Students also gain rewarding personal and professional experiences in the field.

Academic Credits

J.D. students who are selected to participate in the Human Rights Summer Internship Program earn four (4) credit hours. These credits may be applied toward their J.D. credit requirements for graduation.

Scholarship

All interns receive Law School scholarships. Scholarships are used for air fare, housing, food, passport, visa fees, and other internship expenses. Scholarship amounts have been as much as over $6,500 per student. However, in 2010, scholarship levels were lower. We hope that scholarship levels for 2012 will be determined in the 2011 fall semester so students will be better equipped to make decisions about whether they will apply for a 2012 summer internship.
