A journalist-in-exile, Jallow was given the International Press Freedom Award by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression in 2005 for his courage in pursuing press freedom. He twice won the Hellman/Hammett award in 2000 and 2004.
For exposing human rights violations and corruption in the West African nation of The Gambia, Jallow and his colleagues were constantly threatened, harassed, tortured, and jailed with impunity by authorities. In 2000, Jallow himself had been held in solitary confinement and incommunicado. The Gambia's National Intelligence Agency even summoned Jallow to appear before the security agency on the pretext of examining his paper's registration documents.
